Without network monitoring, you would be stuck in a reactive world. If a problem occurred, you would be notified by one of your clients, and you would fix the problem. Despite best efforts by all parties, this still happens, but network monitoring moves you (to some extent) into a world of proactive management of your IT hardware and software. Network monitoring gathers real-time data and classifies it into performance issues and outages. Performance issues are used to predict the need for future scaling of the environment. Outages are alerted to on-call staff as a page or an urgent phone call from the NOC. Figure 6-1 shows a NOC.
