3.2.3 Implementation Architecture This section presents a memory-based implementation architecture for the departure-event-driven traffic shaping. w10x proposed an architecture that was implemented with the existing VLSI chip called the Sequencer w15x. However, as the number of connections becomes large, the Sequencer-based architecture requires many Sequencer chips and is not cost-effective. On the other hand, the memory-based architecture can be implemented using off-the-shelf parts and can handle any number of VCs. Figure 3.12 shows a memory-based architecture, which is divided into two units. The storage unit is composed of a cell memory, an input FIFO, and an output FIFO. Disabling SSID broadcast stops your wireless network from being announced as available to Windows XP systems and other wireless clients in range of your access point; however, without additional layers of security (such as encryption), users within range can still use a range of wireless network discovery tools to find your network. These tools do not rely on these SSID announcements to find wireless networks. Instead, they listen for wireless network traffic, extracting captured information to determine the details associated with networks within range. Disabling SSID broadcast offers a great way hide your network from casual and less experienced wireless users, but it does not make your wireless network completely invisible. Nonetheless, you should always disable SSID broadcast as a wireless security precaution and best practice. There is a small downside to disabling SSID broadcast, namely that your own wireless client systems no longer discovers your wireless network automatically. Thankfully, it s easy to help your Windows XP systems find these hidden wireless networks all you need to do is manually configure them with the same SSID name used by your network.
